The Sunset Review of the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The mission and performance of Capital Metro is currently being reviewed by the Legislature as required under Senate Bill 1263, 81st Session. The bill requires the Sunset Commission, composed of legislators and public members, to evaluate the governance, management, and operations of Capital Metro to determine what improvements are needed to ensure that Capital Metro operates efficiently and effectively. Unlike state agencies, Capital Metro is not subject to abolishment during this review. However, based on the recommendations of the Sunset Commission, the Texas Legislature could consider making significant changes to Capital Metro's mission, structure, and operations.

The Sunset review involves three steps. First, Sunset Commission staff will evaluate Capital Metro, and in April 2010, will issue a report recommending solutions to problems found. The Sunset Commission will then meet to hear public testimony on Capital Metro and the recommendations of the Sunset staff. This meeting will likely be scheduled for May 2010. Please refer to the Sunset Commission’s website or contact the office for updated meeting schedule information. Based on public input and the Sunset staff report, the Sunset Commission may adopt recommendations for the full Legislature to consider when it convenes in January 2011.

Through the Sunset review, the public has the opportunity to suggest ways in which the mission and operations of Capital Metro can be strengthened.
