Lift-Equipped Buses

All Capital Metro vehicles are accessible to riders who use wheelchairs. If you use a wheelchair or other mobility device and need assistance, all Bus Operators are ready to help you secure your wheelchair. If you'd like to practice using the lifts and securing your chair before you ride, we'll arrange it. Call 389-7583.

Here's How to Board a Bus Using Your Wheelchair

  • Wait at the bus stop. If the stop is not accessible, flag a bus to stop along the route. When the bus stops, stay back and let other riders off and on the bus.
  • When the lift platform lowers to the ground, back your chair onto the lift.
  • Lock your chair's brakes, hold on to the lift's handrail and let the Bus Operator know you're ready to be lifted into the bus.
  • Once you're on the bus, present your ID and the Bus Operator will help secure your chair. Each bus has at least one area available for passengers who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices. The seats flip up so you can back your chair into the area. Each area is equipped with a wheel clamp, a lap belt and additional securement belts.
  • Inform the Bus Operator about where you will get off, so the bus can be positioned for your convenience. As your stop approaches, pull the stop request cord, push the stop request tab on the wall or remind the Bus Operator.

Getting Off the Bus

  • Let other riders get on and off before moving from your secure seating area.
  • Unfasten the lap belt and securement belts and push down on the wheel clamp lever to release the lock.
  • Move on to the lift platform, set your brakes and let the Bus Operator know you are ready to lower the lift out away from the bus. When the platform barrier opens, get off the platform and, for your safety, move away from the bus.
