Austin Chamber Honors Capital Metro Wellness Program

Agency recognized at Greater Austin Business Awards

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Chamber of Commerce last week honored Capital Metro with the Seton Healthcare Family Health & Wellness Award at the 17th Annual Greater Austin Business Awards. The ceremony was held on Wed., Aug. 29 at the Hilton Austin with an audience of about 1,000 chamber members and government officials.

The Greater Austin Business Awards celebrate organizations for achievement in customer service, environmental impact, as well as community or employee programs. The Health & Wellness Award recognizes companies “that actively encourage employees to engage in a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle.” Capital Metro was awarded in the large company category (for organizations with more than 400 employees), which featured companies like AMD, Samsung, Baylor Scott & White, and RetailMeNot.

Capital Metro's wellness program offers free personal training and exercise programming focusing on ergonomics and safety, exercise classes, health seminars and information distribution on all health topics. The agency has also instituted healthy-eating menus at its employee cafeteria and vending machines and ensured that all Capital Metro offices, transit stops and Park & Rides are smoke-free. Another component of the program is the implementation of “Wellness Challenges” that promote a healthier lifestyle by engaging employees in friendly competitions, like a recent Healthy Eating Challenge.

The wellness program has been in effect at the agency since 2003 and features four fitness facilities that allow Capital Metro employees to stay fit at easy-to-access locations. Each location is staffed with full or part-time fitness specialists, who oversee fitness training, smoking cessation classes and biometric assessments. Almost 75 percent of eligible employees participate in the wellness program.

“We're thrilled and grateful that the Austin Chamber of Commerce chose to honor Capital Metro,” said Abraham Acosta, the agency's wellness program manager. “But, mostly, I want to thank everyone who participates in the wellness program. They are the real reason we are able to achieve our goals and be recognized for it.”
