E-assist bikes still require the rider to pedal, but an electric motor automatically activates to assist the rider.

MetroBike was transformed with a complete equipment upgrade and rebrand in Summer & Fall of 2024. The system continues to be a collaboration between the City of Austin and CapMetro. The system’s new equipment is provided by PBSC, a leader in the bikeshare industry. The old MetroBike stations and bikes have all been rehomed, repurposed or recycled appropriately.

Bike Rentals & Returns

Once you’ve purchased a pass, rent using the CapMetro Bikeshare app: Scan the QR code (located by the stem) on any bike to unlock.

Day pass and pay-as-you-ride customers can rent one bike at a time. If you purchase a membership, you have the option of adding 3 dependent passes.

To return CapMetro bikes, simply slide the bike into an available dock and wait for the green light to confirm the bike has been locked in place. If you received a red light, your bike has not been returned correctly. Pull the bike out of the dock and try again.

All bikes MUST be returned to an official CapMetro Bikeshare station and properly locked into an available dock. Failure to return a bike to an official CapMetro Bikeshare station will result in additional rental charges and bike recovery fees. If the bike cannot be located, the customer is responsible for the cost of the bike replacement. Failure to return a bike properly may also result in a locked account.

We rely on our customers to use the system as it was designed so that we can continue to provide a reliable service.

Contact Customer Support immediately by calling 512-474-1200. If possible, return to the bike and confirm the return by pushing the bike into the dock until the green light confirms your return. Bikes not returned properly will result in additional charges.

If you do not receive a green light when attempting to lock your bike at a station, please:

  • Ensure you have inserted the bike all the way into the dock. Try pushing the bike in by the seat while holding one handlebar.
  • Try a different dock.
  • Try a nearby station with available docks.
  • Call Customer Support at 512-474-1200. Do NOT leave your bike unlocked if you cannot dock it. Extra fees may apply.
