Media Safety Guidelines
When your job takes you near railroad tracks, please be aware of the potential danger of approaching trains. Here are some important safety guidelines to keep in mind:
- You should never stand on or near the tracks while reporting, photographing or videotaping. It is illegal and very dangerous.
- Our trains are faster and quieter than freight trains, and are not required to blow their horns in designated quiet zones. If you're standing on or near the tracks, you may not see, hear or feel the vibration of an approaching train.
- CapMetro has a zero-tolerance policy for trespassing within the railroad right-of-way. The right-of-way extends 25 feet on each side of the tracks from downtown to the Gracy Farms crossing, and 50 feet on either side of the tracks from north of Gracy Farms to Leander.
Following these guidelines will not only help keep you safe but will also set a good example for the community. If you have questions or would like to schedule a rail safety presentation, please contact the Communications Department at 512-592-2171. Please review the media guidelines below for additional details about rail safety.
