CapMetro, Creative Action Unveil Vehicles Wrapped in Student Artwork for Earth Day
Students from four local elementary schools were selected as part of an art contest
AUSTIN, TX (April 18, 2023) - CapMetro, in partnership with Creative Action, unveiled two zero-emissions buses and two Pickup vehicles wrapped in local students’ artwork in celebration of Earth Day.
The agency partnered with Creative Action for “Art on the Bus,” an art contest with local elementary schools. This year, students from Graham Elementary (Austin ISD), Smith Elementary (Del Valle ISD), Camacho Elementary (Leander ISD) and Pioneer Crossing Elementary (Manor ISD) were asked to create artwork using recycled materials to highlight their favorite places in Central Texas. 28 students’ artwork were selected to be featured on the vehicles.
“Events like this not only promote CapMetro’s sustainability goals but also allows us to showcase some of our talented Central Texas students and their passion for a healthier environment,” said Dottie Watkins, President and CEO of CapMetro. “Educating students from a young age about the benefits of public transportation, and how it can help our environment, can help create a better community for all of us.”
Through this contest, CapMetro and Creative Action educate local students about the environmental benefits of using public transportation, as well as zero-emissions vehicles.
“All students who participated in Art on the Bus this year learned about public transportation, were introduced to the concept of sustainability, and were invited to look for inspiration in their communities,” said Patrick Torres, Executive Director for Creative Action. “Through our partnership with CapMetro, we hope these young artists see the value of public transportation and that everyone who sees these vehicles wrapped in their artwork will remember that CapMetro is such a gift to our community.”
The wrapped vehicles are scheduled to be in service until April 2024.
One of CapMetro’s core values is sustainability, which is central to the mission of the agency. In 2022, the CapMetro implemented a Sustainability Vision Plan to help guide all operations, planning, design, construction and performance of its transit system to not only keep communities connected, but also protect the environment. The agency also made a commitment to be carbon neutral by 2040, including a fully electric, zero-emissions bus fleet.
