CapMetro is proposing several service changes to take effect in January 2024, as part of a triannual adjustment to improve our customers’ overall riding experience and respond to how they use the service.

Currently, CapMetro is taking feedback from the community on the proposed service changes. The agency is hosting an in-person public hearing on October 11 at noon at the CapMetro Headquarters (2910 East Fifth Street). There is also an online survey where people can share their thoughts, here.

The agency will use this feedback to make a final recommendation to the Board of Directors, which is scheduled to be voted on at the October Board Meeting.

If approved by the agency’s Board of Directors, CapMetro would add a new Pickup zone for the Dove Springs neighborhood, as well as reclassify Routes 18, 217, and 335, and remove Express Routes 981, 987 and E-bus Routes.

The Dove Springs Pickup Zone is proposed to connect Southeast Austin residents to other frequent CapMetro service options and popular destinations within the zone. This new zone was prioritized to allow the agency to bring more service to this area of Southeast Austin while we continue to prepare for the future CapMetro Pleasant Valley Rapid line, which will also help serve this neighborhood.

The agency is also proposing to continue operating Routes 18, 217, and 335 at a 30-minute frequency, instead of reinstating the 15-minute service and removing them from the High-Frequency Network due to low ridership. These route frequencies were reduced in 2020, and there would be no change to how the service currently operates.

Also, as part of the service changes back in 2020, CapMetro suspended Express Routes 981, 987 and E-bus routes. The proposed January 2024 service change would permanently discontinue the routes to save resources, and alternative service options are available in these areas.

The agency will also make minor schedule adjustments to select Bus and Rail routes to improve on-time performance and reliability.

If approved, these changes would take effect on Sunday, January 14.
