Proposed Fare Payment System Updates

CapMetro is proposing an upgrade to how you pay for your rides! Here's what we're working on:

Introducing Tap to Pay

Riders will be able to tap to pay on buses and trains using:

  • Debit and credit cards
  • Apple Pay & Google Pay

New scanners are being installed on select buses, but please continue to use the current scanners until further notice.

New App

  • The CapMetro app will be retired in March 2025.
  • Riders will be able to use the new Umo app to pay for fares and Transit's app to plan their trips.
  • Our ultimate goal is to integrate Umo & Transit.

Updated Retailers

Load funds to your Umo app or Reloadable Fare Card at an updated network of participating retailers.

Pass & Card Changes

Select passes need to be replaced to work with the new system. We'll help customers swap current cards and passes for new CapMetro Reloadable Fare Cards starting in February 2025. Details on how to switch will come soon.

  • What’s going away: Digital 31-day and 7-day passes in the CapMetro App. Digital payments have automatic daily and monthly fare caps, so you never overpay and don't need to pay the full amount upfront.
  • What needs to be exchanged: Plastic cards, including AMP cards and plastic passes supplied by social services.
  • What doesn't need exchanging: Paper cards with a black stripe on the back.

What do you need to do?

All digital passes in the CapMetro app will need to be used or migrated before March 2025.

    • Paper passes have a magnetic stripe located on the back of the pass. Continue using these on the farebox.
    • Existing plastic passes will not work on the new scanners. These passes may be tapped on the farebox through April 1. Customers are encouraged to use the value on their cards before this time.

If this update is approved by the Board of Directors, here’s the timeline for changes:

    • Jan 31: Stop selling 31-day passes and remove the option to add stored value in the CapMetro App
    • Feb 13: Stop selling 7-day and day passes in the CapMetro App
    • Mar 1: Retire the CapMetro App and AMP cards.
    • Apr 1: Retire all plastic cards (31-day, 7-day, stored value and plastic passes supplied by social services).

As new scanners roll out, pay by tapping all plastic fare cards (except AMP card) on the farebox. Please use any remaining balance in the CapMetro App or on fare cards before these changes take effect.

    Title VI

There is no fare increase, only the payment system is changing.

These proposed changes are going through a Title VI Analysis to determine if there would be disparate impacts to minority populations or a disproportionate burden to low-income populations. The results of the analysis will be shared with the CapMetro board prior to their decision to approve the proposed fare payment system changes.
